Hey Doug Mate I thought that all the Canon EOS models did automatically count the images taken, mine dose and has always done so.
The first shot recorded was an with IMG_0001 JPG, and it's last shot to date is IMG_ 8154 CR2, being a raw image.
all my shots have the image numbered like that until of coarse one changes the name of the pic
