IMHO Canon has to sell merchantable goods in that they must be able to perform the functions they were designed for & the consumer buys them for.
Write a letter to Canon asking them to repair or replace otherwise you will take action with the
ACCC...be nice about it but be firm.
There may also be
consumer affairs in you state than can help.
Failing all that...get legal advice!
