Michael, Bojans idea makes me think immediately of a couple of other things.
1. We have a decent sized black plastic garden compost bin (cheap as, from Bunnings) which would fit over a pier, the attraction being the open bottom is wider than the top and it has a convex plastic lid that will keep water out, and twists off. A bit hard to tell from Bojans pic but I'm fairly sure the compost bin is wider than the thing Bojan tried.
2. Got a spare wheelie bin ? Take the lid off, and upend it. Possibly rather heavy though.
