Hi John,

Welcome to Ice in Space.

That star is not actually a star, its more likely Venus which is the brightest object in the sky in the early evening, or Jupiter.

My guess is Venus due to its intensity.

Have a search here for the word "conjunction" to see some lovely photos of the moon, Jupiter and Venus which has occurred in the last few weeks.
