Roger, if you don't want Image Stabilisation, then the 17-70 Sigma f2.8-4.5 is an excellent choice. The Sigma is IMO close to the L series lenses for performance, and in my experience the 17-70 has less CA than the 24-105L Canon (I had both for a while). I've seen user reports claiming comparable or better performance from the 17-70 with the 17-40L.

The L series Canons may just edge the Sigma out on contrast and flare resistance, although I didn't ever test the two specifically to verify. The Sigma is also has quite a decent Macro capability.
