Canon have an 18-200, not exactly a quality lens but it does cover the same range.
I'm with Roger on the 24-105, it's my favourite lens.
If I was hiring and only taking one lens, I'd be tempted to try the 28-300 L seres, that would give you a reasonable range from semi wide to Tele and better image quality. If you're after something wider, the 18-135 might fit the bill.
If night widefields are your main aim then it's a whole new ballgame, perhaps the 16-35 F2.8L.
