Mirko(N1) in NZ reported his observations of the Horsehead with an 8” dob in his 2nd Feb 2016 post. See his thread:

He described seeing a “notch” only without any shape.
I have seen IC 434 but have not seen the notch that Mirko refers to. It is on my list to try again when the heavens align - altitude, dark skies, very good seeing ....! I am being incredibly patient with this one!
