Can I set off an off camera flash with the remote?

I want to get my flash off the camera and I think I have the gear, I just can't get it to work.

I have:
5Dmk II
580 EX II Speedlite
400D (Rebel xti)
Two Tripods
One Canon Remote RC-5

I want to mount the flash off to the side while I take portraits with the 5DMK II

I also have the MT-24 EX Twin Macro Lite is this any good in the mix?
