Matty I would check if the 450D has the same shutter release features as the 40D.
We use the supplied Canon software with our 40D and have the camera connected to the PC via a usb cable. The shutter release, the length of exposure time and the auto firing of multiple shots is all controlled by the laptop with a very easy to use Canon program.

Last night I focused using live view on a bright star. ( Live view is no good for focusing on dim objects). After focusing I simply set the program to take 15 shots at iso 800 with a ten second interval between shots and exposure time at seven minutes. The images are automatically downloaded onto the laptop and the program tells you how many shots have been taken and how many to go. there is a countdown timer as well. I would never go back to using any other form of shutter release.

The same goes for your dark frames.
