Mike,

I use a DC/DC converter from Dork Smith that plugs into a car ciggy socket. This allows you to select the output voltage, the device comes with a variety of connectors. I can use this with either a bettery or 12v mains PSU. You can get the same thing at Jaycar I am sure, just make sure you get a switchmode/regulated type to avoid wasting battery power and potential for overvoltage.
