Geoff you maybe surprised, but to replace the front element is not really a big deal, and not that expensive, however if there is more serious damage, well that is another story.
A mate of mine bounced his 600mm F/4.0 L and did exactly as you did, and got it repaired no problems and reasonably cheap, they, these lenses are pretty tough, not to say concrete is not a good surface to drop them on.
Then of coarse, is it worth the expense of shipping and repair costs, could insurance cover it maybe.
