I had this same problem when I was using the ST-i through a Mount Hub Pro. To rid myself of the problem I ran the long cable through the mount and connected it directly to the computer. If you have a spare USB port on your fit PC then try that.
I think this problem primarily is about power to the camera. The camera will have trouble connecting if the power is just slightly off. I have noted that this problem never has occurred again since going direct.
