Yes, I remember the (bad) old days, in the early 90's, when I struggled with a homemade 'cookbook' camera to barely capture 1 frame/sec & then manually sort through the lot for the best 10 to 20 frames for stacking and processing.
Then came the webcam 'revolution' which changed the playing field.
Then came IRIS software which semi-automated things
Then came registax which made things a whole lot simpler in the processing department.
Then came better/faster cameras....
Then came AutoStakkert.... and it goes on...
I agree that we live in good imaging times...
Just looking for some really affordable, true adaptive optics next........
