For Canon you can't go past these 2 lenses.
1. 24 - 70 IS L
2. 70 - 200 IS L
These are both awesome lenses. The 24-70 never comes off my Canon. The 70 -200 is great for sporting events, portaits, landscapes and Astro :-)
The 24-70 is great for star trails.
