By way of a desert island/no medical help available DIY discussion is concerned.... I had also had an idea of something along the same lines using a hand bag resus/ambu-bag as it already has the check valves and openings for tubes,etc driven by electro-mechanical means. You probably need a capability to deliver 10-20 breaths per minute in the 500-800cc range. It would need to be pressure limited for safety, probably in the same pressure range as a CPAP machine (4 to 20 cmH2O). Of course a proper ventilator is MUCH more sophisticated with various constant pressure, const volume and other specialty modes
Of course outside a hospital, you could probably only use a face mask (full face pref), as intubation would be risky in the field and ill advised.
