It's interesting that you mention NOT doing sharpening first H. This is what you see processing astronomical images - the PI guys argue any deconv should always be done first with subtle settings, followed by curves, saturation, sharpening etc as required. You also need to have low noise in the image to start with (=stacks of data in Astrophotography) or else you just clump the background noise.

Darrin's examples interesting too - certaintly how much the fence wire comes out afterwards.
