Sadly it seems likely that it will take a long time for truly clear night skies to return. Even here on the coast further north, an easterly wind can not clear the muck. Far too much fine ash has been carried into the upper atmosphere. We need these fires to be put out and that is not going to happen without good rain, and clearing winds aloft. I have heard suggestions that May could be the earliest we can hope for a return to useful astronomy skies. A good east coast low would help alot.
