Baz, the reason for the delay between shots is probably in camera noise reduction. If you have long exposure noise reduction on the camera is merely taking a dark frame during the lengthy pause. If you're taking raw and intend on using the images, you should manually take dark frames as the in camera ones are only applied to the Jpg file and not the raw.
