It's not like the original 6D had astonishing DR, but the dark noise was pretty good for the time, combined with convenient software support being a Canon. It could be they'll stun the world with the dark stuff once they get out in the field. It's possible!

But it seems they've either done this deliberately or they've run out of steam...the 80D looks more appealing from the DR point of view, but as you say there are others on the market...and now there is Nikon support, and even Fujifilm cameras can be tethered (but probably too small a share of the market to make remote control into the mainstream astro imaging suites viable).

The market has changed now...the QHY367/ASI094 look pretty appealing for astro-only, and these things weren't available 5 years ago.
