It doesn't apply to businesses doing less than $75k worth of sales to Australia. Likewise private purchases from an individual.
Also I don't think they bother pursuing it on items slightly over the $1k threshold.
I'm waiting to see what happens when the Cheesegrater arrives, that's a big enough sale to get someone excited and I may have to do a customs declaration and pay at an Aust Post depot, have done before.
Alternatively some carriers who deliver to your door, notably Fedex - are geared up to handle GST directly and they will invoice you (and you must pay before they will deliver the item).
