Remote Release For Fuji - Need Some Help

I have been using an old but very satisfactory Fuji X-E1 of late to capture pretty pictures. I ended up with a Rainbow Imaging intervalometer style remote release, it works well. This remote plugs into the mini-USB port on the X-E1 and allows programmed timer releases as required.

So, when I splurged recently and got the X-T1, I figured maybe I could use the same release. No way, it has a micro-USB fitting. Typical.

So, get a suitable adaptor, mini USB to micro USB, simple. Ah, no, no release.

Plan B then. I have a new generic multi fit release. It has an intervalometer system, and the cord terminates in a simple female mini plug fitting, 2.5mm (I think).

There is a 2.5mm "port" on the X-E1,and also on the X-T1, both used for audio usually, but one can also use this 2.5mm port to trip the shutter, and the X-T1 manual actually suggests Fuji encourage this for third party remotes.

So, now when I slip the appropriate cable into the end of the remote, and the other end into the Fuji (either Fuji) nothing happens, no release. Starting to drive me nuts.

If I "short" out the two contacts closest to the cable, the focus works, it is the half-depress of the shutter button. If I do the same short of the inner and most outer contacts, the shutter (both Fuji's) trips, so the "port" within the cameras are both working.

I cannot for the life of me work out how to read a multi-meter, sorry, it's not my specialist topic. I'd love to know how to if someone could walk me through this please, and I will try to establish if the remote release is actually "triggering" anything at all, or if the cable and plug attached to the remote is "wired differently".

It would be nice to be able to use the new X-T1 for some timed imaging, the "app" does this of sorts, but not on "B" so only has a maximum of 30 seconds. Not long enough.

Any electrical people out there? PM is fine if you prefer.
