is IR/UV filter needed for DSLR?

Hi All, I've ordered the IDAS-LPS filter (2in) for use with my Canon 40D to help deal with the light pollution in my area.

Is an IR/UV filter also a good investment to sharpen stars etc. And is there any problem in combining with the IDAS-LPS. I got the latter because it appears to have the least issue with colour correction in later processing and wouldn't want to ruin that with an innappropriate IR/UV combination.

thanks,

Rob
