Nick,
my mount cover is just a bit wider than EQ6 mount (with counterweight shaft retracted and DEC in horizontal position, suspended with wooden stick), that means ~40-50cm.
When I was finishing my pier, this water tank was the only suitable option at Bunnings (it is not available any more).
Compost bin you are mentioning may be a better option for smaller OTA.
It is ~10 min job to attach the scope counterweight and C11 and be ready to go for the task.
