I read threads like this:
http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthrea...6/Main/5494372

...and then I used the process described in HAIP to measure the actual read noise with and without binning on my U16M. The read noise increased with 2x2 binning to the extent that the benefit of HW binning is marginal for my camera.

The KAF sensors have form for implementing HW binning badly. The KAF-8300 has a horizontal shift register that is too shallow for binned data resulting in horizontal blooming on bright objects like stars. My previous camera was a SX H-18. I have been bitten by this twice in a row!

Cheers,
Rick.
