Looking for the Eight Burst, but what did I get?

Hi all,

as I haven't got goto on my old EQ mount, when trying to hunt down faint DSOs, I set the declination circle to the required dec. and sweep in R.A. .

This first object was way too far west to be the Eight Burst nebula, although on the same Dec at -40 30', about half way between Canopus and Sirius. It looked like a diffuse object in the 4" Tak. I looked in this area with The Sky program and could only find a globular and a edge on galaxy; niether fit the appearance of what I have imaged. With 14" LX200 at f10 using Astro 40D with 8 x 1 minute exposures.

The second is in the general area of where the Eight Burst should be, but is it just a red star? Although I am puzzled by its large diameter, as focus was good.
