They are not "useless" but they are certainly not useful either.
I find that a pop up flash is usually added as an item of convenience, rather than an actual feature. I wouldnt go back to using a popup flash again after being spoiled by the amount of speedlites I've used
(Nikon SB800 + 2x SB600's remote, Canon 580EX x2 one remote for backlight/front fill etc)
