Perhaps you are right that this could be enough in an amateur camera, particularly if there is not much noise coming from camera's electronics.
My camera's ICX 814 has a shallow well depth thus even with 16bit ADC, it gives only about 10,000 different values /shades of grey per pixel (given that my calculations are correct).
So again, this seems like a great opportunity to relatively cheaply acquire a nice camera for astrophotography.
