I am going to try another look at M83 at the next New Moon to see if I can get more detail here at home, hopefully it will be a bit higher making task easier. My previous ob was on March 15 2010, before that it was July 2009 when I had just got my 12" so hopefylly a later obs will improve view.
NGC 5078 definitely has a dark lane, but only pops out with averted vision and only for steady moments. Given that transparency was pretty average, on a really good night should be capable of seeing clearly.
