I have been doing a lot of swapping back and forth between DXO and Ken Rockwell, especially when he does a whole bunch of lens comparisons. I largely am just going by how they perform in the corners as it gives a reasonable indication of how well they'll handle stars as they move out from the centre of the frame.
Thats my theory anyway. My 24-120 F/4 works well for every day use but REALLY falls short with astro work.
