Short exposure masks for bright stars?

Hi all,
Tried imaging the gas/dust around Antares the other night.

Antares was a bright orange ball with a deeper orange halo which distracted from the subtle dust in the background.

Is it possible to use shorter exposures to form a layer mask in order to combat the glare from brighter stars (a la the trap in M42)?

Cheers
Doug
