The focus ring on the 300mm F2.8L spins uselessly without the lens attached to a live camera ie on. I am sure this is to stop any damage to the mechanism. The aperture can be set by attaching the lens to a camera, setting the aperture and then remove the lens while the camera is still on.This works for lenses where focus is manual.
OK looks like the 5D mod from Hutech is the way to go.
Now the only choice is UV IR block filter or clear.
I think the UV IR block is the way to go as I have no need for IR photography. There is more IR from local terrestial sources than from the sky.
