Don't forget you can also use a trick called 'binning' (e.g. trading resolution for exposure and/or noise reduction). It's a great way to vastly increase the amount of light you can gather in light polluted areas in a single exposure.

And depending on your equipment and seeing conditions, the reduction in resolution may not have an adverse effect at all on the amount of detail perceived.
