I usually give a couple of dollars if I have it on me. I'm not going to miss it really. I also ask their name and try to chat just for a minute. They generally seem to appreciate someone taking the time to recognise their existance instead of being a faceless nobody and they tend to perk up a bit. That probably is more helpful than the money.
