Rob if your 40D isn't modded then you won't need an IR filter. In fact the IR filter that is built in is way tooooo heavy handed and cuts out plenty of the red as well. Hence the trend to mod the camera and have a more selective IR filter (or no filter only a piece of glass for doing IR photography) installed.
