My thought was that I dont need an EDMOD cable as I can just connect the synscan USB to a USB port, but now I'm thinking this skywatcher thing is useless and there is no other option to the EDdirect cable units linked below?

Suggest you try using a USB2 port. For some reason the synscan USB controller allegedly doesn’t like USB3
