A good site to compare cameras is dpreview.com.

No doubt they have reviews of this camera and its competitors which would be Canon 650D and Nikon D3200 or D5100.

The usual complaint about Sony DSLRs is a lot don't like the electronic viewfinder (EVF). The latest model is the A99 and it has an improved EVF.

The other usual complaint (probably not a valid objection for you if don't intend to do much photography) is the limited choice of lenses. The plus though is some of the lenses they do have are apparently pretty nice (Zeiss).

But in low light and moving the older models can be lagging and noisy.

As far as image quality goes I don't know and you'd be best reading reviews on the DPreview site. Most likely Canon and Nikon competing models are ahead of the Sony who is the "new" kid on the block in DSLRs.

The latest Sony A99 seems to be ahead of both Canon and Nikon in DSLR videos with a 60 frames per second slow motion and image stabilisation built in to the camera which makes video much much nicer plus a nice autofocus that works well with video. But that is a $3000 camera.

Greg.
