Just had a thought - perhaps I can remount the filters in low profile holders - if I can find some cheap, plain, 1.25" coloured filters with suitable holders to canibalise...

I've heard many stories like this with many filter wheels, it's common unforch, there's no standard. Just be fanatically careful.
