If your relative looks like he will get into astronomy I reckon a dobsonian reflector of sorts. I just picked up one brand new 200/1200 Saxon, delivered for $500 from E-bay. These require regular maintenance to cullumate so a passing interest wouldn't suite. A refractor would be the best in that case I reckon. Cheers
