What Carl said Greg. Depends how you define common though. Tasmania gives you the best chance of seeing/photographing one in Australia (apart from Macquarie Island) but there can be months between displays even at solar maximum. I have now spent 28 nights in Tasmania and there were visable aurora on 4 of those nights, but only one display (and the only one I saw) lasted more than an hour or so.
