Well that will shoot my advice down in flames then
This problem is often faced by firewire cameras with laptops unless a powered hub or PCMCIA card is used.
As for the USB version if Steve's idea doesn't work try a powered USB Hub. The firewire ones draw a fair bit and maybe it is similar with the USB ones
