Couple of things.......
Make sure you have downloaded the latest WIA Driver for the 350D from the Canon site and installed it. WIA560EN from memory.
Use the Yellow setup menu to set the communications to PC Connection (page 121 of the manual) otherwise the camera will not communicate with your PC or laptop.
