I have a very restricted sky in my backyard, so a 3 star alignment is out of the question.
I was fairly dissapointed with the results of a 2 star calibration until a SW agent told me a trick. it goes like this...

- level your heq(doh),
- Align the 1st star by using the alt / az controls.
(yes, the dreaded easily bent bolts and nobs at the bottom of the mount)
This fools the mount into thinking it is perfectly Polar Aligned.

- then use the hand contol to align the second star.

accuracy goes up by a hugh factor. -give it a go. Ive never been able to do a 3 star alignment using this method, but I imagine the results would be even better.

by the way, it works for Mrs Rider's Argo Navis guided eq5 too.
