I bought the Canon External Power pack for my 40D. It supplies 7.8v to the camera. I chopped the lead to the camera in two and fitted plug/socket combo to the ends. Reconnecting them gives me the original power from the mains but a 7.8v battery can be connected when in the field. LiPo or A123 cells work great but each have their own charging problems. 12V gelcel with 4x diodes in series also will work.
