Thanks for your replies.
I have tried the longer exposure to get 50-75% on the histogram - that made it worse. I noticed that the flats I used seem to have a different visual profile than my lights - so I will need to trial exposures and ISOs a bit more.
Also the histogram of the colours is different - I don't know if that matters but the red is shifted in the flats. I may need to use a different white balance for the flats?

Also it may be associated with the dew cap being used for the lights but not the flats. I will try more options - I'll get it right eventually.
