The lens in the barrel is in fact a balrow lens. It actually increases focal length.

When you remove it, it will produce a smaller image on the CCD, but it will be brighter, and clearer than thru a barlow. But for planetary work, the barlow might be needed to get some size.
Focus is at a different point when you use the barlow, so maybe use it on the moons edge and try to focus and see where the focus is. You may need to reduce or increase the spacing from the telescope if there is not enough travel on the focuser.
