When you refer to cable release I think of the mechanical plunger affair you screw into the shutter control button. The canon only has electronic control
Using the tc80 ypu can do bulb interval exposures of any duration up to 99 hours. There are other mods one can do for the earlier canons to enable shutter control. See attached pdf. There is another which i will compress and post as it exceeds size limit as pdf
