Rob,
I have tried to disable Canon EOS because it inserts itself automatically and prevents Backyard EOS and nebulosity from starting cleanly.

To do this is went into Control Panel/All Control Panel Items/AutoPlay and scrolled down to where my Canon 40D popped up on the list. In each instance I then changed the default action to "Take no Action"and that seems to have had some effect.

You may find it alleviates your problem also.
