Baz, you can't achieve off camera flash with your existing gear. The only way to trigger a flash off camera on the 5Dii is via an extension cord or a flash trigger, canon make one I think it's an St-2 or something like that. Alternatively you can use a second 430 or 580 ex on camera as a trigger, the two can communicate wirelessly and the flash on camera can trigger without firing. There are also some aftermarket wireless triggers, the cheaper models don't support the ETTL functionality, the ones that do cost more than a second flash. I bought a second flash, the Nissin DI-866 to act as both a second flash and trigger. The DI-866 will cost about half of the 580EX and only a few $ more than the ST-2.
FWIW the 7D has inbuilt wireless trigger.
