Sorry you're not quite right Dennis, regarding what the Canon 'L' stands for, but you are on the right track - it actually means "As expensive as 'L'"

As Dennis mentioned, as well as the better quality glass, the L lenses also have better weather sealing and are mechanically better built. My 70-200 L f2.8 is all metal and glass and there are very few plastic bits to it. As a result it weights 1310 grams and has a rrp of $2400. Compare this to the 55 - 200 which weighs 310 grams and a rrp of $449. But if I was attacked, I could bludgeon my attacker to death with the L lens and after wiping of the blood, be ready to take some more photos. The 55-200 would just crumble.

Actually, some of the non-'L' lenses do actually use L glass and design - the 17-55 f2.8 is an example, and I think the 60 macro is as well, but they lack the weather sealing.
