I had the same decision to make as you ( Ive got an Ed80, heq5 pro too) and the difference between the 1000D and 450D was only a few hundred more so I went with the 450D in Dec- if it was 300 + diff I probably would have started with the 1000.
The 450D is fabulous and as a newbie Im thrilled with the results.
Either way you will do well.

Same decision process here as well.
1000D is a good camera as well. But what tipped me was the bigger view screen ....it really helps when live focusing with screen magnification of 10X.
Also frame rate. The 450D can take more shots per second. I used mine lately at Luna park capturing kids on rides mid flight...no problems.
